World Read Aloud Day

February 1st is World Read Aloud Day!  We don’t normally do a big celebration at Brookwood for this as we have guest readers later in the month for Read Across America, but it is super easy to participate (and we are a registered participant again this year).

Just read a book to your class, have students read to each other, or invite a student from an upper grade to read a book to a lower grade!  You can even use one of the read aloud websites like BookFlix, StoryTime online, or others – super easy and no extra work.

There are lots of links under “e-books” on our Destiny Home Page

You can find more information about this day by clicking here!

Dino-mite Book Fair!

Our book fair opens (weather permitting) on January 30th and will be open until the end of the day on February 6th.   The hours are 8 am to 4 pm.  If you cannot attend or perhaps have family members who are not nearby, but would like to make a purchase for your child, you may shop our virtual book fair online from January 26th until February 15th.  All purchases - whether in person or online - benefit Brookwood.  We use book fair funds to purchase new books and supplies for the media center and also to provide author visits for our students.  Thank you for supporting our book fairs!

Previewing for Purchase

Fourth and fifth graders are using virtual book previews to choose books that they want to purchase for the library.  First they worked in groups to decide on criteria such as how to be sure we are chosing books for all students and not just ourselves and also how to stick to the budget.  We will narrow down their selections and use them to make our last book order of the year.

Makerspace Challenges

Third graders worked in small groups to complete a makerspace challenge in a limited amount of time.  This is to encourage them to use our makerspace to design or invent solutions to problems.  Each group received a brown paper bag full of items to use - everyone received the same items with the exception that each bag had ONE unique item.  Then the groups received DIFFERENT challenges.  These kids were SO creative and original!!!

Stick Together in the New Year!

Third, fourth, and fifth graders receive a sticker to place on our new "Stick Together" poster when they check out a new book and do not have any late books still out.  I started this to encourage students to return books they are finished with and get a new one.  So far, it seems to be helping.  Students are ALWAYS welcome to renew a book if they are not finished with it and that never counts against them.  Everyone is guessing what the finished product will be and how long it will take us to fill in the poster!
