Smile - it's Raina Telgemeier!

We had a wonderful morning with Raina Telgemeier. First a super presentation that really held the students interest, then book signings, and finally, lunch with our contest winners and Raina. I will get more photos up soon, but wanted to get a couple of slideshows at least up tonight.  I have a lot of photos and video to edit as I handed out iPod touches to some students right before the presentation.

I also need to give a really big THANK YOU here to Mrs. King, Mrs. Maney, and Mrs. Weaver for their help with the luncheon today.

Author Visit

Raina Telgemeier will visit our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders on Monday, October 24th.  Ms. Telgemeier is the author and illustrator of the graphic novel, "Smile."  She has also adapted four of Ann M. Martin's popular Babysitter's Club books into graphic novels and co-wrote, "X-Men: Misfits," with her husband, Dave Roman.  In addition, Ms. Telgemeier is also a cartoonist and many of her cartoons can be viewed on her website, goraina.com.  For the last couple of weeks, students have been learning about Ms. Telgemeier and have also had the opportunity to create their own web comics.

While at Brookwood, Ms. Telgemeier will have a special lunch with 12 students who will be chosen through a contest - "Why I want to have lunch with an author."  Students may write an essay, draw a cartoon, create a video, poster, poem, etc. for their entry.  All entries must be turned in to the media center by the end of the day on Monday, October 17th.  Winners will be announced no later than Friday, October 21st.

Online Book Fair

You can never have too many books! Even though our school book fair has ended, you can still purchase books online until October 20th. All online sales benefit our school. You can even invite family and friends to shop by sending them an ecard from the book fair! Students (and teachers) can also create their own personal wish lists.

The best thing is that the books you buy will be shipped to the school for FREE after the book fair ends on October 20th. This is a great way to shop for presents - there is an amazing assortment of books online - you are sure to find something for everyone!!! Orders will be delivered to students at school, so be sure to contact Mrs. Wagner (cindy.wagner@dalton.k12.ga.us) if you prefer to pick up your purchases to keep them a secret!!!

The Book Fair is Coming!

Our first book fair of the year will begin on Friday, September 23rd, and will be open until 7:30 that night during Ballyhoo. Our book fair theme this year is "Reading is Out of this World." Fifth grade students are shown working on commercials for the book fair that will be broadcast to the school. Currently, they are storyboarding their ideas - the first step in the process.

The book fair will close at noon on Friday, September 30th. However, the ONLINE book fair will be open from September 30th until October 20th, providing a chance to purchase an even greater assortment of books. In addition, the online book fair gives grandparents, aunts, uncles, godparents, and other important people a chance to purchase books for students even if they are not able to attend in person. Books purchased at the online book fair will be shipped free to students at the school after October 20th. A link to the online book fair will appear on the "Book Fair" link WHEN IT OPENS on September 30th.
We will also post the link on this blog.

Summer Reading Rewards

Over 80 students returned their summer reading lists and were treated to a party in the Media Center on Friday, August 26th. Mrs. Hammontree, who retired in May, returned to celebrate with us. Students received goody bags and were able to also select a special prize and choose a book to keep. In addition, fifteen students won door prizes when their tickets were drawn! Thanks to everyone for reading! Keep up the good work!

Off and Running

We are off to a great start this year! Every class at Brookwood Elementary visits the Media Center once a week for a lesson and to check out books. Pre-K and kindergarten students will begin to check out in a few weeks after completing lessons about responsible book care and learning about the library. All grades have been reviewing book care and learning the new check in/check out procedures that are in place this year. Third, fourth, and fifth graders have also practiced using Safari, our online card catalog. Students may also visit the Media Center to check out book anytime throughout the school day with the a pass from the classroom teacher.
