The Book Fair is Coming!

Our first book fair starts on Thursday!!!  We will be open every school day from 8 am to 4 pm, except for the last day, the 25th of October, when it will close at noon. We will NOT be open during Ballyhoo this year as Ballyhoo is being held at Lakeshore Park, but families are always welcome to come shop during our regular book fair hours.

We also have a VIRTUAL book fair that will have even more books than we can offer at school - you are sure to find something for everyone.  Please share the virtual fair link with grandparents or others who may live far away, but may wish to purchase a book for your child.  Click the link on the right side of the page for more information and to go to the virtual book fair.

If you would like to volunteer to help at the book fair and did not receive an email from me to sign up, please click here to access our online volunteer sign-up.

Hold the Solar System in your Hand!

I wanted to do this a few weeks ago, but things were still packed up.  So today we were able to use the Explorer all with our Merge Cubes.  I put a book on each table and students were instructed to find a planet they wanted to know more about and choose that table after they checked out a book.
Then I used my document camera and an iPad to show them how to use the Merge Cubes.  They were so excited!  After exploring their "assigned" planet, they were free to visit any others.  At the end, each table shared one thing they had learned about their planet with the rest of the class.

We Love Reading!!!

I am so proud of all of these students!!!  They not only read this summer, but they took the time to document their reading and turn their lists in to me.  And many of them also sent photos.  AND they have been patiently waiting for their reward while our media center was being renovated PAST the date it was supposed to be ready.

We had two parties - one for K - 3rd, and one for 4th and 5th graders.

And I am doubly proud of this group of 5th graders - they have attended the party every year that they were eligible while attending Brookwood!!

We are ready!

I would be remiss if I didn't give a shout out to my husband, Bob, for delivering boxes and helping me set up this party.  Truth be told, he also goes shopping with me for these prizes three times a year, giving up a Saturday that he could be relaxing!

This is only part of the goodies - we will have a different selection for the older kids!

Kindergartens First Library Visit

Today was the first time that many of our kindergartners were able to visit the media center for classes.  Some of them were here in pre-k last year, but others had never seen our media center, so we had to be sure and mark this special occasion with some photos.  Kindergartners will start checking out in a few weeks - hopefully, we have all of our lights in by then and that will make it easier for them to search for books.

Also caught some of them laughing uncontrollably at "The Book with No Pictures."  They were surprised to learn how much fun a book that does not have any pictures could be!  (If you have not heard this book, just ask one of our kindergartners about it!)

WE ARE BACK!!!!!!!

I just cannot contain my excitement at being back in the Media Center.  While there is still work to be done, (we are missing lights and some ceiling tiles, still need some paint, still have some leaks,) at least we can use our space. MANY THANKS to Ellen King, who graciously gave up two days to come and help us unpack. It took nine weeks to pack and just about a full week to unpack almost everything.  (We still need shelf brackets in the professional area and of course, my office is not completed, but the KID area - the important part - is ready to use.)

We will be working on decorating more - holding off a little as workers will be in and out for the next few weeks after school, but so far, students love our door!

Students have been excited to come in and have classes in the media center again and FINALLY are able to check out books!
