Dig Into Reading Safari!

We had a great time with author/magician Chad Crews today. He once again amazed us with his magic, made us laugh at his antics, expanded our knowledge, and at the same time - promoted reading. I know we will have a lot of students coming to the library for books about magic, snakes, scorpions, and other topics that Mr. Crews mentioned today.

4th and 5th graders enjoying a special lunch with our guest. Students who attended won a persuasive letter writing contest with their reasons for wanting to have lunch with Mr. Crews. We also discovered that some of our students have magical talent, too, as they shared card tricks before and after lunch!

Students who purchased Mr. Crew's magic book also received autographs and had their photos taken with him and his albino snake!

Return Engagement!

We are looking forward to hosting educational entertainer, Chad Crews, again on November 22nd. Mr. Crews visited last year (check out the blog entries for November 2012) and students have been looking forward to his show ever since! Orders for "So You Want to Learn Magic - The Sequel" should be turned in as soon as possible to guarantee delivery at the show. If you cannot find the order form that was sent home earlier this month, just write your name (first and last, please) and "I want the Magic Book" on any piece of paper and turn it in to Mrs. Wagner with $10.

November Lego Club

We had our second club meeting this month. Check out some of our neat creations!

4th Grade PSA Projects

Fourth grade classes have begun work to create Public Service Announcements (PSA)to help other students learn about Digital Citizenship. Students have lots of options to create their PSAs, but most storyboard their ideas first.
Check back for more photos as these projects develop!

More Pictures of Centers Added

Primary grades are really enjoying our library centers! It is the first thing a lot of the students ask about when they come in as a class. While we do not use the centers every visit, I think we will continue this and change the centers up on a regular basis. New pictures have been added to the first slideshow - just scroll down a little to see the entry and the show!

Writers - Thinkers - Creators!

Fifth graders have their own blogs for writing in the Media Center. We have been covering the topic of digital citizenship and are currently using the blogs to think about and write about what we have learned. Students have also been creating their own avatars to add to their blog profiles. The photos show the students blogging and creating their avatars.

Lego Building Buddies

We had our first club meeting this morning. Our next meeting will be on November 15th and we should have even more kids (and Legos) next month. Everyone had a great time. We had beach houses, swimming pools, movie theaters, and lots of great building ideas.

Primary Centers

This is our first week trying centers (stations) in the Media Center and it went fairly well. First we went over our procedures and then children were allowed to choose their center. A few classes had time to change centers, too. We had a variety of centers so there was something to interest everyone!

Banned Book Week

Our fifth grade classes celebrated "Banned Book Week" in the Media Center today. In the photos, they are trying to figure out what the books on the tables (all of the books on all of the tables) have in common. They were surprised to learn that all of these books - including many of their favorite books - have been challenged or banned in other places. We had an interesting discussion on our first amendment rights, too.

Celebration!

I am so proud of our students who read this summer!  We held a party in the Media Center on August 31st to celebrate.  A big thanks to our PTA for providing popcorn for a special treat!  We gave away some door prizes and then watched a slideshow of students who sent in summer reading pictures.  Then students were able to collect their goodies!  Students picked out two new books and choose two prizes in addition to the items that everyone received as they went down the line to fill their bags.

Welcome Back!

We just finished our first full week of school!  We have had a wonderful beginning in the Media Center - except for the a/c not working for several days - but I am happy (very happy) to report it is working again.  Kindergarten through 5th grade students have library once a week as a class.  Kindergarteners will spend a few weeks learning about book care before they check out books.  It was great to see everyone and to see our students so eager to check out their books.

Parents, if you have any time and would like to volunteer in the media center, please email Mrs. King and let her know and she will get you on the schedule.

Brookwood READS! What & Where are YOU Reading this Summer?

A slide show using submitted pictures of students and staff members will be posted here throughout the summer. See what your friends and teachers are reading this summer.  Pictures should be emailed to Mrs. Wagner.  Don't forget to fill out your summer reading log, too! (If you can't find the paper, it's okay - just make your own list - write the name of the books and the date you finished reading each one. Don't forget to put YOUR name on the top and then add your teacher's name for the 2013/2014 year before you turn it into the Media Center.)

REMEMBER - You can read ebooks by clicking the link on the right hand side of this page!

3rd & 4th Graders

Third graders have been researching rocks, minerals, and soil. Fourth graders have been researching Colonial Times. After using the Internet and Pathfinders to locate information, both grades created glogs - online interactive posters - and shared some of their findings with their classmates.

Thanks for Shopping!

Our BOGO book fair ended earlier today. Thanks so much to everyone who came and shopped. This is a quick book fair, but still takes a huge effort to pull it off so smoothly. A HUGE thank you to all of our dedicated book fair volunteers, but especially to Ginny Carson for the wonderful job she does running our book fairs.
THANK YOU, MRS. CARSON!

What a Fun Day!

Author Susan Stevens Crummel visited Brookwood on Tuesday, May 7th. Her visit was so much fun! She is a wonderful storyteller and each presentation was perfectly geared for the age group.

At the end of the day, we returned to the media center, where Mrs. Crummel autographed books for students who had purchased them for the occasion or already owned them and brought them to school.

How Exciting!

As mentioned earlier, the fifth grade students have been creating book trailers. We have been posting them on the Brookwood Vimeo site as they are completed. Last night, I was reviewing the site and was surprised to see that that Alan Silberberg, author of one of the books, "Milo Sticky Notes and Brain Freeze," had seen and commented on Samantha's video less than 24 hours after we posted it! Amazing! You can see the video and the comments by clicking HERE.

5th Grade Book Trailers

Our 5th grade classes have been hard at work creating book trailers. Students had quite a few options on how to proceed with this project, but most have been using iMovies on the iPads. The first step in making the trailers was to learn how to storyboard their ideas. In addition, students are responsible for correctly crediting any photos that they did not take themselves or music that was not available in the app. We will also be uploading the videos, creating QR codes that will take you to the videos, and posting the QR codes in library copies of the books and in the library (and possibly other locations) all in an effort to spread the word about the books we love. We also hope to blog about the process and embed the videos into the student blogs.

The Cat in the Hat Visits Pre-K

Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Green's Pre-K classes had a special visitor in the Media Center this week.  We had just finished reading "The Cat in the Hat" when who should appear but the Cat himself!  The students were excited to get to visit with one of their very favorite storybook characters!
Thank you Cat in the Hat for spending some time with us in the Media Center!

Research

Third and fourth graders have been using Internet Pathfinders, stored on our Media Wiki, for Internet researching. For both grades, this is an opportunity for using informational text, in electronic forms (websites and eBooks), to find the information they need. The Colonial Webquest that the fourth graders have been working on also incorporates skills such as using charts, map reading, drawing inferences, and forming and supporting opinions. Third graders are also using printed reference and non-fiction books in their research on rocks, minerals, and soil.

Snow Day for Pre-K!

Happy New Year!

Here are some pictures where we are making SNOW with pre-k.  We read several books on snow during the last two library visits, but we hadn't seen any snow in Dalton yet, so we made our own!  The pictures are a little grainy because we had a power outage right before we started!  Funny story - I was getting the students to quiet down by counting down from 5 to 1 so we could start making snow.  Just as I said "One" - out went the lights and the kids all thought I made them go out!  :)   It was neat to watch the snow forming and everybody got to feel and play with it for a few minutes before it was time to leave.
